Mahatma Gandhi University of Horticulture & Forestry

Mahatma Gandhi Udyanikee Evam Vanikee Viswavidyalaya (MGUVV) has been created by Government of Chhattisgarh through Mahatma Gandhi Udyankee Evam Vanikee Viswavidyalaya adhiniyam-2019.


Mahatma Gandhi University of Horticulture & Forestry, Sankra, Drug, Chhattisgarh was established on 26th March, 2020 with the objective to promote education, research and extension education in the fields of Horticulture, Forestry and allied disciplines in view of importance of Horticulture and Forestry to develop and improve the State economy, which led to the establishment of this University.

Total Geographical Area of University

The total geographical area is 137.90 lakh ha, out of which cultivable land area is 46.77 lakh ha, forest area is 63.04 lakh ha and remaining 28.09 lakh ha is under fallow land, waste lands, barren land, water bodies, pasture lands, community land etc. Chhattisgarh with 44 per cent of its area under forests has one of the richest bio-diversity areas in the country. It has abundant minor forest produce like Tendu leaves, Sal seed, Chironji, Harra, Bahera, Arjun, Aonla etc. Medicinal plants, Bamboo, Lac and Honey are other potential resources to support significant contribution towards the livelihood of the forest dwellers. Similarly, Chhattisgarh enshrined with Horticultural crops ie Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers, Medicinal & Aromatic Plants, plantation crops, spices etc in 8.28 lakh ha area and production of 110.28 lakh M T with productivity level of 13.32 MT per hectare in 2020-21. The state has potential of area expansion of 16.07 lakh hectare and r production of 370.55 lakh MT of horticultural crops.

Commitment

The University has 12 campus and 4 affiliated Colleges of Horticulture located at main campus Sankra and other strategic locations of Chhattisgarh and 3 Colleges of Forestry, one at main campus Sankra and 2 at Pandrapath- Jaspur & Ambikapur to impart U G, P G and PhD programmes. The University has research stations for carrying out innovative research and Van Vigyan Kendra & Udyan Vigyan Kendra situated in strategic locations for dissemination of improved production technology at grass root level.

The University is committed to development qualified professionals, experts and tools, techniques, technologies and know-how to harness the potential of Forestry and Horticultural crops and its sustainability for providing employment & entrepreneurship to youths , livelihood improvement of tribal and socio-economic development of people of Chhattisgarh.
